Compare and contrast essays

How to write compare and contrast essays

These essays are typical for composition and literature courses, yet this is possible that you get assignments of this type for your history, biology, or any other course. Comparing and contrasting objects in educational context is most often about discussing, finding differences and similarities in two or more related subjects, most often some literature pieces like short stories, novels, journal articles, etc. Sometimes assignments are getting more precise, like when your lecturer asks to compare and contrast two characters from the recently read novel, writing style of the authors, main ideas, or settings. Often students get an assignment of comparing two movies. More rarely such assignments are not related to literature and students are asked to discuss war tactics of different leaders, causes and effects of major historical events, two marketing approaches, etc. Certainly there are several specific guidelines that students are encouraged to follow while writing such essays.

Approach that you should use depends on what you are discussing. Sometimes this is important to focus on only comparing or only contrasting. Sometimes this is necessary to do both. In the introductory paragraph you should get reader acquainted with discussed subjects and then lead into similarities and differences in the body of an essay.

This is important to remain focused on comparing and contrasting. A common mistake is when writer starts discussing issues that can be related to only one subject of an essay. This is not the goal of compare and contrast essay and you must save your thoughts about what is not related to both subjects for another type of an essay.

You may want to discuss subjects of your essay in turn. In this case you discuss main points of one subject first and then compare and contrast the second subject to the first one. You may also want to choose the points of intersection first and then go through these points one after another discussing both subjects of comparison in one paragraph.

Whatever approach you choose this is important to remain focused on the goal of an essay. Please also do not forget to drive conclusions and present them in the last paragraph of your essay.
