Expository essay

How to write an expository essay?

An expository essay is a type of a composition that is meant to determine, define and explain the subject of this particular essay. You are very likely to deal with this type of an essay while taking composition class or any other literature course. This type of an essay is, however, possible to be assigned for any other course.

This is wonderful if your tutor provides you with a topic. If this has not been done, you will have to make up the topic yourself. Depending on the course you are taking, this can be anything starting with your family relations and ending with country’s economical crisis. Do not make your topic too broad or too narrow. Think twice before you choose to write about cosmos or anything as broad, as this is a topic for a book, not an essay. Neither should you choose to write about threading a needle if you do not want to fit your expository essay into one sentence.

Once the topic is defined, come up with a thesis. Thesis is the main though which will go through the whole essay. Announce it in the introduction and make it a clear statement which you will be supporting in the essay body. The body of your essay should lead the reader to conclusion about the topic of your essay and you must restate this conclusion in a few sentences at the end of your expository essay. Summarize your thoughts in conclusion paragraph. Your summary must leave the reader with an impression that you have covered, defined and explored the main points of your topic. The best way to leave this impression is to actually do all of the above.

Remember that your essay in most cases must be entertaining to the reader. In order to do this, choose interesting topic, write about interesting facts that are not commonly known. Be creative in your approach.
